Each month any important issues will be listed here as well as on the homepage. Please take the time to read them. Thank you. *** Borough Codes are now available online: In March of this year the Council adopted a new sidewalk ordinance. This ordinance will establish where sidewalks are mandated, size, grade, and specifications for construction. Council will be enforcing this new ordinance in an effort to promote sidewalk usage and they ask that all sidewalks be kept clean and usable. This includes removing grass, gravel and other debris from the entire width of the sidewalk and replacing any sections that are damaged or broken. If you have any questions please contact the Ordinance Officer at the Borough Office Monday-Friday 1-4pm. Eagles Mere is one of the few remaining oasis where responsible parents can still allow their children to venture out alone - in a reasonably safe environment. In this environment we tend to revel in our freedom and walk wherever we choose. Families have frequently walked down the center of major streets, with babies in strollers and young children trying to balance themselves on bicycles. We also tend to park as close to our destination as possible, not always being careful about whether we might narrow the thoroughfare too much, or block another driver’s view of pedestrians or children darting between cars. We have also been blessed with luck – luck that we have had relatively few serious injuries from traffic, parking and children on streets, which would sadden us all. In addition, there have been times at the Beach when an ambulance or fire truck could not safely drive between the cars parked on both sides of the road. We need these emergency vehicles to have clear access to wherever they need to go. The Borough Council has consulted the community and experts diligently over the past few years to come up with a plan to improve road safety. Key goals include keeping speeding down, building a comfortable walkway from the Village Green to the Beach and the Park, and expanding parking at the Field of Dreams. An important element is to keep the Park and Beach entrances clear of parked cars. We have a responsibility, morally and legally, to assure the safety of our citizens and their property. As a result, Borough Council has established ordinances and other rules to guide the community to respond to our responsibility. To help identify many of those areas where parking could constitute a possible threat to safety and property protection, signs have been erected. We expect the community to appreciate these efforts and cooperate with them. To enhance these efforts, a year round Traffic Control Officer has been hired with the authority to “ticket” any vehicle not complying with our guidelines. Fines are $25 if payment is received or post marked within 4 days of the date of the “ticket”. After the four days the fines will be $50 plus the costs incurred by the Borough attempting to collect those fines. A drop box is also planned to be available at Borough Hall, on Fern Lane, by July. We hope that you and all folks in Eagles Mere will join us in protecting the safety of our people and property.
