The Eagles Mere Conservancy, Inc.

In 1980 a group of concerned Eagles Mere homeowners banded together to purchase the last of the old resort hotels, the Crestmont Inn, to protect it from commercial development and preserve the natural beauty and its surroundings.  This effort became the nucleus of The Eagles Mere Conservancy, Inc.

From that single effort, the Conservancy has expanded its activities to include support for a wide variety of nature oriented activities, including education of children in natural sciences, evening lectures, organized hikes along blazed trails, employment of a full-time naturalist, and acquisition of additional lands.

Today the Conservancy owns 373 acres of beautifully wooded mountain slopes with 3 miles of blazed trails connecting with other famous Eagles Mere trails laid out nearly 100 years ago.  The adjacent State Forest Lands provide beautiful walks to such notable locations as Canyon Vista and High Knob Overlook.

Our headquarters is the Conservancy Cabin beside the Outlet Pond on Route-42.  This cabin, dating back to 1734 or earlier was saved from demolition and reconstructed on Conservancy property to serve as an Education Center.  Today programs open to children of all ages are conducted three or four days a week throughout July and August by a trained naturalist and an artist.  Schedules are available at the Cabin and other locations around the borough.

Entertaining and informative evening lectures for all ages are held periodically by experts on animal life, water pollution, herpetology (snakes), bats, limnology (study of fresh water), and a wide variety of other subjects.  Some speakers provide hands-on experiences by bringing some of their friends.

For the lover of active outdoor activities, weekly hikes are organized and led by local outdoorsmen with inside knowledge of the "really good" spots in the area.  A co-leader specializing in the local geology or wild life also attends.   The hikes are for all ages, but notices announcing the hike schedules specify the length of the hike and its degree of difficulty.  We try to include waterfall, stream, cave, view, or historical site on each hike.  Bring your pail for some great berry-picking.

The Eagles Mere Conservancy is a vibrant, active organization dedicated to the principals of conservation and education, but is also eager to help you get the most enjoyment from your Eagles Mere visit.  We'd like to help YOU.  If you'd like to help US and support our efforts, a tax-deductible contribution would be most appreciated. The Eagles Mere Conservancy, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 charitable organization registered with the Pennsylvania Department of State.

We are also happy to have volunteers for the many tasks required to keep such an organization going.  We survive because of our volunteers.  Our three miles of trails are kept clear by a happy hard working group.  Help in our educational program is also welcome.
