Betty Mariner Hays, Mayor

                                                                                          January 2010

Greetings and Happy New Year! Let us hope it is happier than 2009 was for some of us.

As I write this on January 12th, there is plenty of snow on the ground and it is still coming down sporadically. We have a light wind and some ice in various places, notably the lake. The Toboggan Slide is being built and if temperatures hold below freezing and ice conditions remain stable the toboggan slide will open January 22. Please call 570-525-3244 for latest information.

At the Reorganization meeting on January 4th, Bill Feese was re-elected Borough council President and Peter Glaubitz was re-elected Vice President. Bob Ryan was once again appointed President Pro-Tem. President Feese announced the following appointments made by Council:
   Secretary-Treasurer – Kay Wilson
   Ordinance/Zoning Officer – Kay Wilson
Open Records Officer – Kay Wilson
   Street Superintendent – Frank Shoemaker

  1. Summer Helper – Cheryl Shoemaker
  2. Winter Helper – Jeremy Moore

   Parking Office – Adam Maczuga
   EMBA – Greg Adams
               Lance Robson
Museum – Joanne Smith, Elaine Mudrick, Barb James, Phil McDermott, Trudy    Whitmoyer, Rich Caracio, Peter Glaubitz, Joan Warner, Ellen Klarsch, Beth   Schetroma, Christelle Loftus
Zoning Hearing Board – Julie Adams
   Solicitor – Brett Feese
   Emergency Management – Wendy Hastings
Sewer Enforcement Officer – Paul Baron
                   Alternate – Norman Miller
   Engineer – Larson Design
July Fourth Commissioner – Laura Besecker
   SCOG – Tim Borges
   Vacancy Board – Charlie Gardner
   Minority Inspector – Ruth Hild
(This list of appointments may be subject to change if some persons are unable to accept the appointment.)

Council's greatest concerns at the moment are filling the vacancy left by the passing of our good friend and council colleague, Mary Mooney, and making sure everyone understands the reasons for the minimal tax rise for this year.

Bill Feese appointed a Nominating Committee of three – Peter Glaubitz, Christelle Loftus and Charlie Gardner – to proceed legally and with dispatch to examine the resumes of all those interested in the Council vacancy. Their assessment and nomination will be discussed at a committee meeting held on January 26th and presented at the February 1st Council meeting. So more on that later.

A well-informed, concise, and extremely clear letter about taxes has been sent to all our constituents and the feed-back has been favorable.

Some of the shops in town – The Museum, The Jolly Trolley, The Bird's Nest, The Book Store, Dorothy Fisher-Goldsmith – are open on weekends during the winter. Call ahead for times. The Crestmont and Eagles Mere Inns are open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. Reservations are requested, so please call ahead. Eagles Mere Inn Pub with a select menu will be open Friday, Saturday & Sundays 11am ‘til ? .

A gentle reminder: 2010 is the year of the Census. So please cooperate with the Census Takers when they appear or call.

Wishing all of you a happy and healthy 2010.

   Your Mayor,
