Shade Tree Commission

The Eagles Mere Borough Council established the Shade Tree Commission in 1994. Since that time, an annual program of tree care and planting has resulted in nearly 600 trees being planted to date. As a result of the Commission’s work, Eagles Mere has been designated as a Tree City USA for several years running.

Here’s how to get involved: Each year a letter is sent, after the holidays, to individual landowners in Eagles Mere providing them with a select list of trees along with an order sheet. Orders are then placed for needed trees and trees can also be ordered for designated areas such as Conservancy, EMAA, OR Borough Property. Space is also provided on the order form to indicate whether one would like to assist with the plantings.

With the guidance of the Penn State Extension Urban Forester, teams are organized to plant, water, mulch and clean up around planting sites. Tree planting usually is undertaken on two different schedules. Phase I – the bare root planting in approximately mid-April. Bare root trees provided whenever possible as they start their new life with an enhanced root structure and a head start on growth. Phase II – the balled in burlap planting (usually evergreens) which is held on Arbor Day (typically the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend). A mid-day lunch is held for all the volunteers at the community hall after the Phase II planting.

Contributions are welcomed to benefit our continued operation – we are a non-profit entity and rely heavily on the donations by concerned citizens. Many local businesses do more than their fare share by donating their time and equipment to help with the delivery, unloading, storage and site preparation for the trees. We have also been successful in grant procurement from Federal, State and the University of Pennsylvania sources to help both with the replacement of old dead trees and removal of trees hazardous to public safety. The Borough Council has also kindly helped with funding our various operations.

All volunteers (and also those who donate monetarily to the Shade Tree Commission operations), in their unselfish giving, feel the unique and deep sense that we call community spirit. To all of you – Thanks Again!
