Mayor’s Newsletter April 2009

Greetings from the mountain. Even though winter seems to have a lingering hold on us this year, we know that spring is already here and activities in Eagles Mere are “revving up”.

Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day is May 16th. Once again we are trying to have a short service at the Eagles Mere Cemetery to recognize the service and sacrifice of those who served from the Revolutionary War to the current Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Today it is more important than ever to give attention to the troubles of our time and how to cope with them.
Should we be able to make arrangements you are cordially invited to attend the ceremony at 1 PM on Saturday, May 16th, rain or shine. Your attendance will help show support for the troops overseas.

Census – 2010
Please do not ignore your census survey when you receive it. Already state and local officials are encouraging residents to fill out the form. At stake is more than $300 billion in federal and state funds for schools, public transportation, hospitals, roads and other services, all of which is allocated according to census figures.
The census also determines the number of congressional seats. After the 2000 census some states got new House seats, while Pennsylvania and New York lost two.

Arbor Day
By now some of you have received several notices from Ken Class, who heads the Shade Tree Committee, that Arbor Day is scheduled for May 23rd. The day will be quite different this year as the emphasis will be on education rather than the actual planting of trees as in the past.
            Schedule:

  1. Bonfire kickoff- Friday night May 22nd, 7:30Pm at the Delano home on Happy Hill Lane.
  2. Saturday, 9AM- Breakfast at the Community Hall
  3. Noon on the Village Green- A presentation-in-the-field.

Frank Miller
Frank retired on March 31st after 23 years of service to this community. There will be a celebration honoring him on April 30th at the Community Hall. Meet and greet starts at 5:30 PM followed by dinner catered by the Barn at 6:30 for $11.25 per person. B.Y.O.B., other refreshments will be available. A signup sheet will be placed at the post office, please let them know by the 24th and how many will be attending in your party. If you are out of town you may e-mail Joan Werner (fond111@gmail.com) to add your name.  Seating is limited to 120 people.

EMT Volunteers
The Eagles Mere Ambulance Association is eager to increase the number of Emergency Medical Technicians on the roster. This is a vital community service and anyone wishing to volunteer should contact Rich Schaefer at 525-3069 or Lee Hays at 525-3672 for details.
911 House Numbers
If you haven’t received a 911 number for your house please contact Kim Barto @ Sullivan County Emergency Services 570-946-5010, P.O. Box 157, Laporte, Pa. 18626. Please display the number assigned to you as instructed by Sullivan County EMS as soon as possible. These numbers are vital for emergency personnel to locate your home in the event of an emergency. The H.E.L.P. numbers that were assigned previously are still being used, but will become obsolete soon when the 911 number system goes into effect.

Have a lovely spring. The weather is improving, flowers are blooming, birds are singing. Another beautiful Eagles Mere season is on the way.

Betty M. Hays, Mayor of Eagles Mere
